Muammer Gaddafi, the deposed Libyan leader, has been killed, Libya’s interim prime minister said on Thursday, as forces loyal to the government seized his home town of Sirte.
Mahmoud Jibril confirmed that Col Gaddafi, toppled on August 23 after 42 years in power, was dead. “We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Muammer Gaddafi has been killed,” he told a news conference in the capital Tripoli.
Jubilant Libyans took to the streets in Tripoli and Benghazi to celebrate, with cries of “Allahu Akbar” or “God is great” ringing out across the capital. Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the chairman of the National Transitional
Council, is to address the nation later on Thursday.
