The people discover their power

Hosni Mubarak has fancied himself as the father of his nation. But it took him a whole week to feel the suffering of the families of martyrs killed by his security forces during Egypt’s revolution.

Hours before millions of Egyptians took to the streets on Friday in an anti-Mubarak protest to commemorate the loss of 300 youth, Egypt’s leader told families that “my heart aches like yours”. It took him, in fact, more than two weeks to tell Egypt’s revolutionary youth that he understood them, that he was once a young man, too, who fought for the future of his country.
